J. Grant Coleman

Grant Coleman is a member in King, Krebs & Jurgens' New Orleans office and leads the firm's tax practice. He has been recognized by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization as a Board Certified Specialist in Taxation since the inception of the Louisiana Specialization Program in 1985, and his practice focuses primarily on taxation and business law. He's been a frequent author and lecturer on taxation and business law matters, and his practice experience includes planning, compliance and controversy in virtually every area of federal, state and local taxation.

Grant was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of New Orleans in 1971, a juris doctor from Tulane University in 1974, and a Master of Laws in taxation from the University of Miami in 1977. He served on the adjunct tax faculty at Louisiana State University Law School in 1999 and was an adjunct professor at Tulane Law School, where he taught courses in tax law from 1995 until 2008. 


  • Represented the Copeland family interests in connection with the sale of the Popeye’s recipes and formulas used in the preparation of many of Popeye’s core menu items by Diversified Foods and Seasonings, LLC, (DFS), to Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen (PLK) and the extension of the agreement between DFS and PLK for the manufacturing and supply of the proprietary spices and other Popeye’s products
  • Represented a regional managed care company in connection with the sale of its business to a multi-state entity
  • Represented numerous clients with estates ranging from $5,000,000 to over $100,000,000 in connection with estate tax planning and estate tax administration
  • Represented numerous small to medium-sized businesses in connection with business acquisitions and dispositions in the $5,000,000 to over $25,000,000 range
  • Secured a reversal in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit of a United States Tax Court decision resulting in a multimillion taxpayer refund
  • On a fully pro bono basis, secured a retroactive tax exemption for a charitable organization engaged in Katrina recovery activities
  • Represented an independent tax-exempt hospital in connection with the establishment of a two-hospital system to secure a minimum $100,000,000 capital infusion
  • Represented a regional engineering service company in connection with the sale of its business to a multinational entity
